 | | Plenary Session Presentation: Molecular epidemology
Francine E. McCutchan, PhD, United States
Dr. McCutchan leads the Global Molecular Epidemiology Programme for the U.S. Military HIV Research Programme and is an Adjunct Professor at the Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD, USA.
Dr. McCutchan is an internationally recognized expert on the genetic diversity of HIV-1 and the global distribution of subtypes and recombinant strains. Her current research is focused on HIV-1 diversity in vaccine trial sites in Africa and Southeast Asia. A second active area of investigation is dual infection with two or more HIV-1 subtypes and its impact on pathogenesis, epidemiology, and vaccine development. Dr. McCutchan’s research group has contributed to the discovery of many of the HIV-1 subtypes and developed approaches for the study of inter-subtype recombinant strains, including sequencing of full-length HIV-1 genomes and fluorescent genotyping assays for regional application in the pandemic. Dr. McCutchan is an associate editor of Human Retroviruses and AIDS, a compendium and analysis of HIV-1 sequences, and of AIDS Research and Human Retroviruses. Since entering the field in 1988, she has authored or co-authored more than 100 original articles, reviews, and book chapters.
