Pedro Chequer, MD, PhD, Brazil
Dr. Pedro Chequer is Co-Founder and Director of Brazil’s National AIDS Programme. A specialist in epidemiology, public health and sanitary dermatology, Dr. Chequer is one of the principal architects of Brazil’s model response to HIV. After helping to establish the National AIDS Programme in 1987, Dr. Chequer originally served as its Director from August 1996 to March 2000. He subsequently served as the representative for the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) in South America. In 2002 Dr. Chequer became the UNAIDS representative in Russia, and in 2004 he coordinated the agency’s programme in Mozambique. Dr. Chequer returned to the National AIDS Programme in August 2004 where he oversees implementation of Brazil’s policy of universal access to treatment and its aggressive prevention programmes.
