Marie-Louise Newell, MB, MSc, PhD, United Kingdom
Dr. Newell is Professor of Paediatric Epidemiology at the Centre for Paediatric Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the Institute of Child Health at University College London, UK.
After receiving her medical degree, Dr. Newell trained as a demographer, and worked on research relating to infant and child mortality in West Africa. Since early 1987, she has served as the Medical Coordinator for the European Collaborative Study on HIV infection in pregnant women and their children, and the European Paediatric Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) Network. Dr. Newell is Co-Chair of the Ghent Initiative scientific steering group, an international group focusing on methodological issues related to vertical HIV transmission studies, and currently serves as co-investigator on the Vertical Transmission Study at the Africa Centre, KwaZulu Natal and the Maimwana Study in Mchinji, Malawi. She is also involved in mother-to-child transmission studies in Odessa, Ukraine, and has consulted on HIV and child health issues with many national and international organisations, including the World Health Organization and UNAIDS.
