EXPANDED GLOBAL RESPONSE NEEDED TO COMBAT HIV EPIDEMIC
International leaders in AIDS research and policy have called for the
expanded reach of AIDS treatment, care and prevention services in the
context of changing dynamics in the global HIV/AIDS epidemic.

The first
plenary session of the IAS Conference on HIV Pathogenesis and Treatment
featured new analysis of HIV viral subtypes, information about emerging
HIV epidemics in Eurasia, and Brazil's unique experience with treatment
and prevention delivery.

NEW RESEARCH AND EXPANDED TREATMENT FOR HIV PREVENTION
IAS Conference participants described potential to advance HIV
prevention through research on immune responses, genetics, and
integration of AIDS treatment and prevention services.
RESULTS OF NEW STUDY ON MALE CIRCUMCISION TO BE PRESENTED
Dr. Bertrand Auvert and co-investigator Dr. Dirk Taljaard presented
results of an ANRS-sponsored study testing male circumcision as an HIV
prevention intervention.
BRAND DRUGS AND GENERIC DRUGS: FROM ANTAGONISM TO SYNERGY
Delegates and guest speakers debated the issue of brand name and generic drugs.

Wednesday Update
NEW DIRECTIONS IN AIDS TREATMENT
Pathogenesis and Treatment looked at lessons from the field and
the growing understanding of Cellular Activity which points to
innovative approaches in AIDS treatment.
Researchers looked toward the
next generation of treatment delivery and research, emphasising the
close relationship between evolving knowledge and application in the
field.
Presentations included an
update on the 'state-of-the-art' in HIV treatment, a review of
paediatric treatment and prevention interventions in resource-limited
countries, and discussion of the role of cellular proteins in HIV
replication.

Winners announced at the International AIDS Society and ANRS Award Ceremony.
